Spotlight On: Paleo diet

Hello Readers!  So, we’re always looking for a great way to lose weight while not winding up with a fad diet or a gimmick.  And today, I want to talk about a great option for all of us that can help you lose weight: the Paleo diet.

Let me start by telling you a little about my own personal experience with this.  My family has a lot of thyroid issues reported in it.  My older sister has hypothyroidism, which means her body doesn’t make enough thyroxine to perform properly.  My youngest sister has hypothyroidism.  My mother had thyroid cancer a few years ago.  My maternal grandfather had hypothyroidism, and several members of my paternal side have thyroid problems.  Needless to say, hypothyroidism is a concern for me even though most doctors don’t accept it as a condition when people come in overweight.  Often, hypothyroidism goes undiagnosed in favor of poor diet and exercise as cause for weight gain.  But, this is a discussion for another day.

Anyway, my older sister has been taking mediation for her condition and has been a gym rat for years without much luck.  Recently, her doctor asked her to take an allergen test to see if there might be another underlying concern.  As it turned out, my sister tested positive for a wheat allergy, gluten allergy, and dairy allergy.  As such, her doctor recommended that my sister try the Paleo diet.

My sister researched it and purchased books on the subject, as well as cookbooks, and began her journey.  And within the first week, she lost six pounds, her insomnia stopped, and her chronic acne began clearing up.  So, this got me thinking about how the Paleo diet can help all of us.

So, what is the Paleo diet?  The Paleo diet focuses on eating foods that early humans ate.  The argument in favor of the Paleo diet is that excessive weight gain and health issues related to weight gain only began when humans incorporated grains, dairy, and processed sugars into their diet.  Before then, there were less cases of weight related illnesses.  So, on this diet, all food must adhere to this strict system.  In other words, the only foods allowed are meats, fish, vegetables, and fruits.  Period.  No dairy.  No grains.  No processed foods.

Does this mean that you don’t get your fiber?  No.  Certain vegetables like broccoli and brussels sprouts are rich in fiber.  Does this mean you can’t have sugar?  Well, a little.  You can’t have refined sugar.  But, raw honey (and only raw honey) is allowed.  The point is to eliminate all processed foods from your diet completely.  Now, this diet does allow for three non-Paleo meals per week (a glass of white wine is one meal, so keep that in mind).  The formula is 85:15, in such that 85% of your meals should follow the Paleo diet and only 15% can be non Paleo.

So, what does a typical week of the Paleo diet look like?  Well, let’s take a look.

  Breakfast Lunch Dinner Snack
Sunday omelet with peppers and onions, seasonal fruit Salad with Tuna, Avocado, olive oil, and vinegar Roasted chicken and wild mushroom soup An apple and raw nuts
Monday Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, seasonal fruit Roast chicken lettuce wraps with avocado Ham and pineapple skewers, oven roasted tomatoes Carrot sticks
Tuesday Breakfast Butternut hash Salad with Roast chicken, dried cranberries, pecans, and apple slices Greek meatballs and roasted cauliflower Banana with almond butter
Wednesday Breakfast casserole Leftover meatballs in lettuce wraps with tomatoes London broil with broccoli Mixed unsalted nuts or Paleo trail mix
Thursday Breakfast casserole Steak salad with avocado, tomatoes, olive oil and vinegar Spicy Pork chili and Brussels sprouts Hard boiled egg
Friday Breakfast stuffed peppers Leftover chili Pistachio crusted salmon, roasted beets and sweet potatoes Apple with raw nuts
Saturday Egg and vegetable muffins Leftover roasted vegetables in a salad with eggs Beef and winter soup with roasted zucchini Beef jerky

As you can see, this meal plan is fairly simple to follow, and the meals sound quite yummy!  While this isn’t a full meal plan, it gives you an idea of how the Paleo diet can easily fit into your daily diet without missing any of the good stuff!  Yes, you will have to give up your lattes and wheat.  But, for the most part, this diet can easily adapt to your lifestyle.  As an added bonus, you will see a vast change in your body.

Some of the best news about this diet is that coffee is allowed, but creamer isn’t.  However, my sister found a creamer substitute with almond milk and 100% pure hazelnut extract.  And she has reported that the changes she had to make have not been that difficult given what she’s gained as a result.  She has not felt like she gave up much for this diet, and it has already proven to be successful in a short amount of time.
